Product Description
Whether you want better sound from your computer, your tablet, your CD player, or many other sources, Modi 3 is a tiny delta-sigma DAC that really delivers.
- Modi 3: All The DAC You Need
Plug Modi 3 into any virtually any computer with the included USB to micro cable and you’re ready to go. Or, choose and optical or coaxial digital source with the included wall power supply. Or connect to your phones and tablets that need a low-power-draw device, again using the wall power supply. That’s right--Modi 3 accepts pretty much any input you can throw at it! Featuring the AK4490 DAC and DC-coupled output, Modi 3 delivers great sound far above its price. - Platforms that support Modi 3's 100% UAC2 compliant USB input are:
- Windows. Windows 10 is highly recommended. It is usually plug and play with our DACs. Windows 7 and 8 will work, but may need our drivers. Windows XP, Vista, and Windows Server editions are all untested and are not recommended.
- Mac OSX. From 10.7 on up, Macs have been plug and play with our DACs.
- iOS. From iOS7 on up, iOS devices work with our DACs using a USB Camera Connection Kit, Lightning to USB Camera Adapter, or Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter.
- Android. Most Android devices that shipped with Android M or above work with our DACs using a USB OTG cable. Some may require separate player software, like USB Audio Player Pro.
- Linux. Most Linux distros that support UAC2 natively will be plug and play with our DACs. Please note that we cannot provide detailed technical support for Linux.
- Designed and Assembled in USA
The vast majority of the total production cost of Modi 3-—chassis, boards, transformers, assembly, etc.-—goes to US companies manufacturing in the US. The wall-warts are made in China, but there's some give and take at this price point.
- 2-Year Warranty
Modi 3 is covered by a limited warranty that covers parts and labor for two years.

My music is ripped directly from CDs, and I also have a fair number of HD Tracks at 192kHz/24bit resolution. All are stored and played in lossless format with never any compression. Some DACs give an odd effect with the HD Tracks such that they actually are not as "listenable" as standard CD resolution. The Modi 3 resolves these hi-res tracks beautifully and finally makes them worth the extra price by revealing correctly sounds that just didn't come through with the other DACs. Of course, the same is true of standard CD resolution, just a fraction less detail as would be expected.
The Modi 3 is set up with the exact combination of minimalist features that do just what is needed. Its appearance is also minimalist but quite attractive, and it's well made in the USA with good quality materials. In summary, I highly recommend this device, and in fact I will be buying another one for a second installation.
Extended listening leaves me thinking that perhaps the highs are now a little too polite, and smooth, but for a shade over $100.00 I'm not complaining at all, given the properly impressive response in mids and especially the bass.
The unit itself is small and inconspicuous, apart from the LED on the front that burns brighter than a thousand suns. Other than that the front panel just has a switch to select the source. Speaking of which, the layout on the rear is simplicity itself, with everything clearly marked. Analogue out, USB in, Optical in, Coax in, and power. That's it. There's no getting confused here. Power adapter and USB cable are included.
As for operation, it's been faultless. Never yet failed to reproduce the correct source quality. Currently have an iphone as the source running Qobuz, connected using a camera adapter, output to a NAD T753, and onwards to ADS L730s, and it's all very pleasing for very little outlay.
